How to read your instinct stacking

The three instincts are not personality types. They describe where your attention goes automatically: toward safety and comfort (sp), toward people and belonging (so), or toward intensity and one-to-one bonds (sx). The order of the three, your stacking, changes how any Enneagram type looks in daily life. Two people with the same type can seem very different if one is sp-first and the other sx-first.

Instincts are habits of attention, so they rarely change. What you can do is notice your weakest one and give it a little time on purpose.

Questions

What is an Enneagram instinctual variant?

Besides your type number, the Enneagram describes three survival instincts: self-preservation (sp), social (so) and sexual/one-to-one (sx). Everyone uses all three, but one leads and one is usually neglected. The order is your stacking, such as sp/so.

Why most and least?

Every instinct sounds appealing when rated alone. A forced choice between three scenarios shows which one you actually reach for first and which you reach for last.

How accurate is it?

Fifteen forced-choice scenarios find the leading instinct for most people. The order of your second and third instincts is less certain, and the result tells you when the top two were close. If you land between two stacking results, retake it on a different day and compare.

How is this different from the full Enneagram test?

This is a short, single-purpose quick estimate with its own questions. The full Enneagram test scores all nine types and gives your type, wing, instinct and tritype together, with a personal report.
